INITIATIVES taken by the Home Ministry in seeking partners to fight crime received overwhelming responses from as many as 36 government-linked companies, private firms and local authorities, pledging their support and commitment.

Their cooperation in fulfilling their social obligation to society will see the setting up of a mobile police station, two beat bases and the installation of additional closed-circuit television cameras to keep a close eye on crime nationwide.

The police force will also enjoy the benefit of having an extra 440 auxiliary policemen that can be deployed to other locations other than their normal designated areas of work, "joint effort with companies and councils to fight crime" (The Star, April 22).

All of us who from an integral part of a peace-loving society have obligations and roles to play and we should respond positively to this noble cause.

Of late, public participation towards community policing has been encouraging but it can be better. The concept must be propagated to promote greater public awareness and realization that will lead to better participation.

If direct involvement is not permissible for various reasons, one can opt for the alternative. Adopt a more police friendly attitude and become the eyes and ears of the force. This will inevitably put the criminals and the defensive as their activities are always under public scrutiny.

As individuals, we are also responsible for our own safety and that of our property. It includes compliance with the basic preventive measure which involves nothing but just common sense.

Its opportunity that makes someone commits crime. We have no choice but to discard our acts of complacency, carelessness and the tidak apa attitude-contributing factors that lead to preventable offences.

Take heed as there is so much to learn on crime-related matters. These include the modus operandi as to how criminals operate as well as security tips that are highlighted in the print and electronic media.

Such information should not escape our attention. An understanding of the circumstances can also help minimize chances of being a victim.
