Kuala Lumpur, 16th February 2024 – Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tan Sri Razarudin Husain should be commended for his recent announcements regarding the state of integrity in the Royal Malaysia Police. This follows a spate of events in rapid sequence of unhealthy practices indulged in by, presumably, a small cohort of police personnel.
It is embarrassing to admit shortfalls in integrity as it casts a pall of doubt, but admit we must. The first leg of addressing any issue is to admit that it exists, in the same way that drug addiction, alcoholism or other social ills have to be acknowledged as a problem.
Only then can remedial, corrective and curative actions be instituted, be it a revision of training modules on ethics, religion or plain conscience-building.
Another step in the right direction is surprise visits, namely tu run padang, to police district offices and the like to check on their state of professionalism.
It must be borne in mind that revamping the recruitment parameters for new intakes without nullifying the negative behaviours of those currently at the middle and possibly higher levels in the force, who are engaging in corrupt practices, may frustrate new joiners.
