Petaling Jaya, 23rd August 2024 - After four decades of relentlessly battling the drug menace with fleeting success, the authorities are breaking away from conventional approaches and realigning their strategies.
According to Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, they will now focus on districts with the highest concentration of addicts.
He said that to be effective with more positive outcomes in fighting drug abuse, it is crucial to shift away from older methods and seek new approaches.
Speaking at the PDRM Special Dialogue II 2024 event at the Sime Darby Convention Centre here to discuss and evaluate issues concerning drug abuse and enforcement, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution revealed that Pendang district in Kedah has the highest number of drug abusers in the country at 1,333 out of 100,000 people.
The information is based on data mapping gathered from several agencies, including the police.
Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said, among the other districts with a high number of drug users are in Kelantan and Terengganu namely Marang, Machang, Bachok, Besut, Dungun and Kemaman.
He said when data is compared per 10,000 people, Marang topped the districts by having the highest number of drug users.
