At the roadblock just before the Sungai Besi toll plaza, a major gateway to the North-South Expressway from the Klang Valley, Detective Sergeant Major (D/SM) Bala Govindasamy, 59, leads a team of mostly young police and army personnel in conducting checks on vehicles.

Being the most senior and experienced person on the ground, he makes sure that only those who have permission and have been vetted are allowed to continue with their journey.

"We take turns doing eight-hour shifts.

"It is anything but easy, as we have to make sure that only those who have documented permission are allowed to pass through.

"With COVID-19 cases at an all-time high, we are determined-to make sure that only those with valid reasons can be on the road.

"We hope and pray that our efforts can reduce the numbers and don't end up in vain," he told the New Sunday Times.

"Manning roadblocks requires a lot of patience, resilience and a firm belief in what we do.

"It is a long, exhausting and demanding task, but we make sure we get the job done properly."

D/SM Bala said the officers often encountered motorists who became agitated when they got held up at roadblocks.

"We have to exercise patience and avoid losing our cool.

"What is important for us is looking at the bigger picture, which is winning the battle against an unseen and deadly enemy."
