Penang, 5th March 2022 - Since the discovery of Wang Kelian death camps in 2015, Royal Malaysia Police and their Thai counterparts have increased patrols along the border to keep human trafficking and migrant smuggling in check.

Director of Criminal Investigation Department, CP Dato' Sri Abd Jalil Hassan said, some people still attempted to use 'lorong tikus' (rat lanes) to come into the country but to no avail.

"Due to increased patrols and more control posts being set up along the border from Kelantan to Perlis, the attempts were unsuccessful," he told reporters after launching the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) prosecution and enforcement conference in Penang.

A total of 105 officers and personnel took part in the four-day event, including Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) and enforcement agencies, at a hotel in George Town, Penang.

Dato' Sri Abd Jalil added that modern technology including drones was also helpful in monitoring the Malaysia-Thailand border.

He said, cooperation among the police, Malaysia Armed Forces, Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency, Royal Malaysia Customs Department and Immigration Department was also vital in curbing human trafficking and migrant smuggling activities.
