The Malayan tiger, Panthera Tigris Jacksoni, is critically endangered and will be extinct in the wild in as little as three to four years if drastic measures are not taken soon.
Not only is the animal facing threats from poaching, habitat loss and diseases like canine distemper (spread by pets living with humans on the edge of wilderness areas), tigers are also being starved of their prey - animals like the sambar deer, barking deer and wild boar are also favoured prey of human hunters.
With fewer than 200 tigers in the wild nationwide - the Prime Minister reportedly told the 77th National Land Council last month that there are only between 130 and 140 at the last count - the country’s foremost wildlife authority wants to take those drastic measures now.
In September 2019, the Inspector General of Police, IG Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Abdul Hamid Bador, launched an anti-poaching task force, Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah.
