Kuala Lumpur, 31st May 2026 - New safeguards to protect children from harmful online content will officially come into effect tomorrow, under the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA), marking a significant step in Malaysia's efforts to strengthen digital safety for minors.

ONSA was passed to address rising concerns over cyberbullying, online exploitation, harmful content and emerging digital threats affecting internet users.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced on May 22 two new regulatory frameworks under the Act - the Child Protection Code (CPC) and the Risk Mitigation Code (RMC).

The codes place greater responsibility on online service providers and platforms to reduce digital harms, particularly those involving children and vulnerable users.

Under the CPC, platforms are required to adopt 'child safety-by-design' measures, including safeguards to limit account registration and ownership by users under the age of 16.

Service providers are also expected to implement mechanisms to reduce children's exposure to exploitative interactions and harmful online content.

Meanwhile, the RMC requires platforms to establish proactive systems to identify and mitigate online risks.
