Johor Bahru, 18th October 2023 - For three years of his youth, Awang Daud spent his days and nights protecting the country against the communist threat. Awang, 88, said he was only 22 when he joined the police force in 1955. “During the Malayan Emergency, I volunteered to join the police as a special constable together with my cousin to fight the communists in my village of Kampung Kechil in Kota Tinggi.
“We felt that it was our responsibility to keep those around us safe, and that was why we decided to put our lives at risk. He said that among his unforgettable memories was the killing of a communist leader in 1957.
Awang left the police force in 1958 and joined the army. For his heroism, he was among 92 people who received the Pingat Jasa Pahlawan Negara from Johor Police Chief, CP Dato’ Kamarul Zaman Mamat in Johor Bahru.
