Tan Sri Norian Mai was born in Hilir Perak on 5 November 1946. He joined the police force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on 8 November 1969.

On 6 July 1997 he was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police, and subsequently became the sixth Inspector General of Police on 8 January 1999, succeeding Tan Sri Rahim Noor.
He led the force through the early transformation era of the RMP until his retirement on 5 November 2003, when he was succeeded by Tan Sri Mohd. Bakri Hj. Omar.
