It is disheartening for the members of the Royal Malaysia Police to receive comments from the Director of the Post-Service Division, Datuk Yeow Ching Kiong, stating that police personnel who have opted for EPF scheme have bad intention to commit crime. According to him, the reason behind the personnel opting for the EPF scheme is to ensure that their accumulated retirement savings will not be forfeited should the personnel service be terminated abruptly by the RMP caused by disciplinary action taken against them in relations to guilt of crime.

The Royal Malaysia Police do not agree with his statement. It is really a baseless accusation. It has always been the rights of the civil servants including the police to make their own judgement to either opt for the EPF or the pension scheme. Currently, there are a total number of 4,435 of police officers who have opted for the EPF scheme. As a large organisation, of more than 100,000 personnel, these officers who opted for EPF scheme only represent 4.4% of the total RMP personnel.

In the early years of their career as a police officer, these officers who opted for the EPF scheme kept their career options open, in anticipation that they are required to leave their police career for whatever personal reasons, such as family business inheritance/commitments or for better challenges and opportunities in the private sector. Eventually, most of them choose to continue their career with the police force till retirement.

Some of them opted for the EPF because they were attracted to the EPF scheme which allows them to cash out their contribution in one lump sum upon reaching their age of 55 years old. Their preference of withdrawing a lump sum of money upon retirement will enable them to have an ample capital to start a family business. Other factors that might have attracted to these officers are the flexibility of investing some of their EPF contributions in approved Unit Trust Funds and an annual dividend of at least 5% on their accumulated EPF savings which will increase their EPF savings for their retirement. However, there are also some personnel who opted for the EPF scheme due to peer influence.

It is believe that some of the current EPF holders would prefer to switch to the pension scheme. With this, the Royal Malaysia Police would like to affirm that the police do not opt for EPF scheme with the intention to commit crime as what has been stated by Datuk Yeow Ching Kiong
