LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I wish to refer to several articles that appeared in the letters to the editor column with regards to the the incident involving UMNO youth the MP for Bukit Gelugor Karpal Singh in Parliament last week. I agree with the views expressed by the writers that the fracas in Parliament was a bolt on in house security. I wish to stress that the police has no authority or jurisdiction to enter the Parliament or intervene in the fracas. This is evident as when the House orders an MP to Leave the House it is the Sargeant at Arms, an official of the House who carries out the duty. It is for that reason that i do not allow or agree with politicians who want to hold demonstarations or handing over of memorandums to ministers in or at the Parliament House. In this respect i am also not in favour of allowing or recommending such events to take place inside the compound of the Parliament House. The Parliament sessions has to a certain extant been abused by certain extent been abused by certain Parliamentarians who do not subscribe to ethics or behave in a gentlemanly manner. The Parliament is a place where views and matters of public interest which are beneficial to the Rakyat are discussed and tabled. As leaders who have been entrusted by the Rakyat to do that, it should be an MPs “core business” to ensure that the benefit of the people and nation in general is taken care of. Sensitive issue and baseless allegations should not be hurled under the curtain of immunity in order to gain political mileage. As leades, what is said and done will be scrutinised by people not only locally but also globally. Hence the choice of words used during Parliamentary question and answer sessions which is broadcast throughout the country will not only have a negative impact to the person concerned but the country as well.
