Petaling Jaya, 11th January 2021 - Fake news appears to be increasing together with the number of positive COVID-19 cases as Malaysia continues to be hit by a four-digit surge on a daily basis.

Besides having their hands full with the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities and media outlets continue to combat fake news to prevent unnecessary confusion and anxiety among Malaysians.

Yesterday, Senior Minister of Defence, Ministry of Defence, Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob advised Malaysians to stop speculating about unverified information on the re-implementation of restrictions under the movement control order.

He said this could lead to unnecessary panic buying among the public.

"Do not be influenced by rumours on social media. For example, there was talk last night that the police will be mounting roadblocks and not allowing people to leave their homes. But nothing like that happened.

"So, don't worry, there will be an announcement and we will know what needs to be done after that. So, do not preempt the situation and go on a panic-buying spree and so on," he told reporters after handing out flood aid at the Eighth Infantry Brigade camp in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, yesterday.
