Keratan Akhbar Pilihan The Legacy Of Independence Celebrating Merdeka Over The Decades
The annual National Day celebration always holds a special place in the hearts of Malaysians since Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj's historic proclamation in Stadium Merdeka on Aug 31,1957.
The event evolved from the stadium to parades involving a mutitude of contingents comprising civil servants, students and uniformed bodies.
These colourful displays evoked the patriotic spirit even as the celebration moved from Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur to the administrative centre in Putrajaya. On some years, the "baton" to host the national-level event was passed to several states.
The celebration reflects the strength and spirit of Malaysians during the highs and lows of the country's history.
This was seen in 2013, for instance, when security personnel featured prominently at the parade to honour the fallen heroes in the Lahad Datu intrusion.
Malaysians continue to persevere through it all and despite the parade being cancelled this year, the spirit remains.
